moving away [Aug. 18th, 2006|10:50 pm]
[Tags|]

I have a lot to update, but the most important announcement first - I shall be moving over to [info]elleve. It's not a rename; I've kept [info]ymf for over 4 years now, and there's too much baggage lingering around here; it's time to move on.

That said, I know my entries aren't much entertainment, so unless you happen to have similar interests, don't feel obligated to add me eh?

On a side note: dear LJ, plz 2 b stop flooding me with support notifications already.

[Edit] I really am serious about not adding if there's nothing interesting for you to read, cuz I'm not nice enough to set up reading filters for your benefit!

Christian Theology from the Perspective of UNIX System Administration [Aug. 10th, 2006|06:10 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | rotflmfao]

shamelessly copied wholesale, including the links he'd painstakingly added, from [info]allogenes. thanks much for the go ahead!

Computer Science 313 - Religious Studies 401
Christian Theology from the Perspective of UNIX System Administration
Spring Semester, 2006

Final Exam

Time: Two hours. Use the blue book provided. Using what you have learned in class and what you know to be true, answer all the questions.

[1] (a) Is God root? Why or why not? Could it be that God, as defined in Christianity, might not be root?

(b) What is the significance of being able to bind to ports below 1024?

[2] (a) The question "when did Jesus know that he was God" is a much debated topic in theology. Is Jesus what happens when God does not log in to the universe as root? Discuss.

(b) How does sudo affect your answer to part (a).

[3] (a) Is the universe proprietary or does God support Open Source? Cite specific evidence.

(b) Does someone like Pat Robertson believe that God supports the Open Source movement? Why or why not?

(c) How does your answer to (a) affect your view of science? Specifically refer to the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

(d) Relate the above to the notion of the "Book of Nature?" How does this relate to "the UNIX philosophy?"

[4] (a) Is evolution equivalent to executing (as root):
   $ life -r
(b) Are humans allowed to execute:
   $ sudo life -r
[5] (a) In the Vulgate, Genesis begins "in principio creavit Deus caelum et terram" which is usually translated "In the beginning God created heaven and earth." The Jewish Publication Society's translation of the Tanakh begins "When God began to create heaven and earth..." Discuss the linguistic presupposition and the notion of creation ex nihilo. What does this say about the possibility of multiple universes?

(b) Does God run VMware? Or partition?

(c) Assuming that one might answer part (b) in the affirmative, did we have the misfortune to find ourselves in a Microsoft Windows partition? Is this a form of Gnosticism? Refer specifically to the Apocryphon of John from Nag Hammadi.

Happy National Day [Aug. 9th, 2006|08:12 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I don't care if you call them propaganda, but those were the songs I grew up singing and I happen to like them.

Funny too that I remember the pledge best by the song version. I used to get teased by my classmates for standing too straight during pledge-taking; I hadn't outgrown my NPCC training, actually not even until now.

I realized that it's been over 6 months since I sung the national anthem. Our exco of 8 had 4 foreigners, which left only Royston, Zi Rui, Nurain and I to sing the anthem and take the pledge. It was always kinda odd, bracing yourself to sing when there were so few voices behind the podium.

math help [Aug. 9th, 2006|03:31 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I read this explanation in my sister's assessment book and couldn't quite figure out the jump from the second to third line, ie. why "99...9" is taken as "m". Any help, please? And I do apologize for the scrawl - I was trying as hard as possible not to touch the screen with the stylus, for lack of a screen protector.

To prove that if the sum of all the digits of a number is divisible by 3 or 9, the number is divisible by 3 or 9.

Uh that was only the first part, so if you do want the whole thing, let me know? x=

uncultured [Aug. 9th, 2006|12:42 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

When I've got the money...

  • I'll join everyone else and order lots BPAL stuff!
  • buy the bloody screen protector for my tablet (though that really should be the highest on a priority list, but who says the list is in order of priority!)
  • get green nail art for my nails! //now I really am beginning to sound silly
  • try the uberburger!
okay I forgot what else there was. But better to have a short list, non?

On the other news... I decided that Guitarissimo is just not my thing. I dragged Dongies down to schol with me tonight, for the free concert-cum-workshop by the Singapore Guitar Quartet. Don't get me wrong, the pieces were quite interesting albeit abrupt at times, but I just lack the attention span! The melody must keep changing, and be significantly different from previous melodies to keep me interested. I ended up very restless and impatient (sorry Dongs!). That's quite sad, really. I was hoping to become more refined and cultured, artistically.

I decided a while back too, that I'm not that fond of literature, at least not the likes of Shakespeare and lengthy poems. I don't regret disliking Shakespeare and poems, but all this kinda put me in a rather pitiable plight. How?

awadmancy [Aug. 8th, 2006|02:26 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

bibliomancy (BIB-lee-o-man-see) noun

Divination by interpreting a passage picked at random from a book,
especially from a religious book such as the Bible.

[From Greek biblio- (book) + -mancy (divination).]

If you are having a hard time deciding between turning groupie and following
your favorite band around or to stay put in your accounting job, help is at
hand. Try bibliomancy. Here's the step-by-step method:

1. Pick a book you trust a lot.
2. Put it on its spine, and let it fall open.
3. With your eyes closed, trace your finger to a passage.
4. Interpret the passage as your lifemap to the future.

You could even add more randomness to the process. To do that at the macro
level, visit a library and pick a book at random from the shelves. At the
micro level, instead of interpreting a passage, pick a single word and let
it point you to your path.

Then you could try awadmancy -- divination based on words from AWAD. Focus
on the question in your mind and then click here to get a random word from
our archives: http://wordsmith.org/words/random.cgi

-Anu Garg (garg AT wordsmith.org)

I have half a mind to adhere quite strictly to awadmancy - ha! Oh and if you were wondering, I'd got "pergola".

ccas? [Aug. 7th, 2006|09:52 pm]

I think it'll make more sense for me to make a list of the CCAs I'm interested in, as I'll have a helluva time deciding later. Plus, I would like to make sure that I do get to these particular booths during Vivace. Here's the list, and commentary is what's provided at the CCA page

What I hope would let me do drop-by's or short courses:
Gourmet Club dishes out a smorgasbord of new and exciting culinary experiences to members.
Strategica promotes unique and commonplace games (including card games, board games and other intellectually-stimulating games).
Verts is SMU’s environmental club which promotes conservation through the philosophy of ‘Reuse, Recycle & Reduce’.
Kendo is the modern martial art of Japanese fencing, developed from traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship known as kenjutsu.
Aikido is a non-violent and non-competitive martial art.
Caderas Latinas specialises in Latin Ballroom and Salsa.
Eurhythmix performs hip hop, street funk and break-dancing.

Things I'm considering committing into, perhaps by term basis:
Broadcast & Entertainment (SMUBE) is made up of Campus Radio and the upcoming Campus TV, as well as backstage and emcee crew.
Indian Cultural Society (ICS) explores India’s rich 3,000 year old culture.
Japanese Cultural Club (JCC) promotes a deeper understanding of Japanese society, culture and lifestyle.
Climb Team, one of the newest sports clubs, now trains at our spanking new 2-storey-high rock climbing wall in the Sports Hall.
Kayaking  //but sadly I can't seem to find it on the website

I swear there were more... o_O

much too long for a man who needs love
i miss you since i've been away

getting harder each time that i go

i just wanna be loved by you

no one like you

girl, there are really no words strong enough
to describe all my longing for love
i don't want my feelings restrained
oh babe, i just need you like never before
just imagine you'd come through this door
you'd take all my sorrows away

extreme measures [Aug. 7th, 2006|08:17 pm]

One (since there are probably more) good thing about checking my Friends Page late is that I have the luxury of reading a whole discussion, and learning a slew of opinions, without having to repeatedly check the thread.

A pretty good example (or in fact, the very thing that prompted this particular musing) is [info]idonotlikepeas' post with regard to marriage.

I don't seem to have anything to add to it, partly because his friends have covered the topic pretty well, and partly because I'm usually quite terrible at thinking critically on the spot. Things usually come to me after a few days. x=

One of the games we played at Sentosa while waiting for the Amazing Race to be set up, was to sing a line from a song that fits the theme "Animals", and the team that manages to remain in the game the longest time would win.

Someone sang, "why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?"

Metamorphosis [Aug. 6th, 2006|05:54 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I was away at Metamorphosis, the orientation camp for SIS (School of Information Systems) over the weekend. I met up with my group for dinner at Marche on Wednesday night, and the exchanges were fairly friendly and light-hearted. Camp proper was on Friday and Saturday, and it was a somewhat boring morning at Sentosa - but that was probably a rather biased opinion because I dislike and dread sand so much. Eeps. But it didn't go that bad lah. My group got the longest line (a game where you use whatever resources you have to form the longest line) because some rather ingenious members decided to tear strips and strips of newspapers. Heh it was already the longest before we've even laid down all the members! The water games were pretty fun too, but I kena surprise attacks twice by Bryant, who had Yulin and I running after him with a whole pail of water in revenge. *grins*

The amazing race this time, was really full of running, and reminded me of why I hadn't gone for SMUX camp - the fear that way physically intensive like the OAC orientation camp I had in j1. However, I was motivated by the grand prize of one tub of New Zealand ice-cream each, and subsequently persuaded the rest of my group members to chiong for it. *sheepish* So we just kept sprinting laps back and forth PS and Bras Basah. During Family Day dinner last night, Aksel went up to share his experiences at the camp, and talked about how he was chionging with us despite of his quite recent sprain, how Paul was running back from Cathay to school barefoot because his sandals broke, and how all of us were running so fast that Christopher, our facilitator, had a hard time keeping up. x= It was heartening that we'd all put our best efforts in for the Amazing Race, and the monopoly game the next morning, without any complaints or disagreements. We weren't as rah rah as some other groups, but as Alex put it, we had the engine, just not the packaging. Hehe. And that 'engine' of us won two out of four prizes for coming in first (timing and completion of all the stations!) for the amazing race, and for our performance at the Family Day dinner. *beams*

I really did enjoy the time with my group, and am quite grateful for it because I left feeling quite assured that my next four years in IS will be fun, with quite a number of wonderful people to work with on projects and all.

And now, to hit my Friends Page.

All the years alone and the days that pass so slow
as you wasted your time searching for affection
All the needs, all the wants, all the dreams that came so close
Did you wait for a sign to fly right through your window?
Well you missed the answer walking through your door

Hey there, Oblivious!
Here is your happiness if you would only turn around
Isn't it obvious, Mr Oblivious, love can so easily be found
just turn around

If I could be so bold, may I make a suggestion
you were searching so long but in the wrong direction
I've been standing right behind you all this time

Hey there, Oblivious!
Here is your happiness if you would only turn around
Isn't it obvious, Mr Oblivious, love can so easily be found
just turn around

I am here

Hey there, oblivious!

[Current Mood | sick]

I was already feeling quite woozy as the train pulled into Tanah Merah station, and had to put down my book, fascinating as it was. By the time I'd reached my berth at the interchange - after going up to the 4th floor to return a book and looking for dinner - I was on the verge of swooning. Taking a few bites of my overpriced coney dog (you can't beat Mos!) helped, but only a little. I rushed home, eager to cook myself some noodles in a bid to counter the overwhelming weakened state, only to be put off by the fake kimchi which looked dubiously like shallots - shallots repulse me.

So here I am, with one hot dog, one mug of milo and a few spoonfuls of noodles in my stomach, faintish yet insistent on airing out my grievances.

You have trained me well, LiveJournal.

longwinded [Aug. 1st, 2006|09:49 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

I've been pretty much away from my LJ since last week. Ack, I dare not open my Friends Page yet, not till I have hours at a stretch to spare!

Because I'm feeling somewhat longwinded...

I was involved in One Degree Asia from Mon - Sat last week as a technical assistant. The hours were terrible (7am to 10pm!), and it was stressful because it's all live, but I'm still glad I chose that position. I've always wanted to find out how everything works in the control room, and while I'm far from the point where I can declare liao ru zhi zhang-ness, I've at least made a significant improvement! Heh we were taught how to operate the consoles on Monday night and I was the only suaku asking questions and scribbling notes, and freaking out that I wouldn't be able to absorb all that information in time for Wednesday when only Samantha and I will be around - without Florence to consult! Thankfully it all worked out. While I still made some sort of blunder every day, at least they weren't abominable!

What I do wish to highlight is that I do quite admire Samantha. She's friendly yet independent (often times people, myself included, tend to be either friendly and somewhat clingy, or aloof and independent), responsible, mature and helpful. I'm also very grateful to her because she has been an amazing carpooling partner! She has absolutely no problems waking up on time, and was very patient and forgiving on the days that I screw up. Whenever I start worrying that I'll mess up something, she's the one who was calm and composed, telling me to relax. Really, she has been wonderful to work with.

Yesterday, I took the japanese delegates from Peaceboat around Singapore, with Nicholas and Bryant. I'd actually met Bryant before this, during Sports Camp but didn't remember it till he said the magic phrase "polar bear"! Heh his group and mine had sat down to play a few rounds of the game "polar bear" while waiting for our turns on the DHL balloon. All in all it was quite fun. Nicholas looked quite the serious sort but he turned out to be incorrigibly lame! When Keitaro asked us for recommendations with regard to lunch, his response was "MacDonald's!" And to Keitaro's complaint of thirst, he promptly suggested the seawater... Ack. Nicholas had also brought along Kim, an English exchange student at NUS, so that made our party 8 - Nicholas, me, Bryant, Keitaro, Hiroaki, Marie and Maki. We had lunch at Lau Pa Sat, made our way down to see the Merlion (we, the three guides could not understand why they were so enthusiastic and insistent on seeing the Merlion!), went past the Esplanade and cabbed to Arab Street, then returned to Harbour Front a full 45 minutes late! hehe. I learnt how to say "I don't understand", "green tea", and "one plus one = two" in Japanese. I asked for the first because Keitaro and I had such trouble communicating - he has this perpetual dazed look on his face that you don't know if it's plain sleepiness or a lack of understanding of what you're saying! As for the addition statement: that's because "two" is pronounced as ni in japanese whose pronunciation automatically results in what looks like a smile! To that, Nicholas and I decided to think up other similar expressions that would result in the answer two! The four japanese delegates also did not take to our bottled Pokka green tea because it was too sweet! Because of that, I exchanged my mineral water with Keitaro's green tea - the poor guy looked so baffled and disturbed upon tasting that Pokka green tea haha. Later that night, they treated us to canned drinks on the boat (the vending machine accepts only japanese currency!) so we tried their green tea, carrot juice, milk tea, apple juice and orange juice. The apple and orange juice were somewhat the equivalent of Zapple and Miranda; the carrot juice was as disgusting as you can expect about carrots (so I'm biased!), the milk tea was great and the green tea was bitter - which in my opinion is only good taken hot. They were joking that the only similarity between Keitaro and I was prawn crackers - he can't take spicy food yet I finished three quarters of the sambal stingray, and i don't drink his green tea and carrot juice. Speaking of prawn crackers - we learnt a new way to open the packets! Instead of tearing it, the japanese will hold down the ends of the packet until the gas inside causes the seams in the middle of the packet to rip. Talk about thinking out of the box!

Okay longwindedness ends here...
